# Set up an escape zone

Mark a Jails+ jail with a wand cuboid so walking out triggers a punishment.

Jails+ calls an escape zone a **flag**. A flag is a cuboid. If a jailed player leaves every flag in that world, the plugin treats it as an escape.

This page is Jails+ only. Free Jails has no flags.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

## Get the wand

```
/jails wand
```

The default wand is a golden hoe. Change the item with `general.wand-tool` in `config.yml`.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Select two corners

Left-click one corner of the jail. Right-click the opposite corner. The selection must cover the whole area a prisoner can walk, including any gaps they can pearl through.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Save the flag

```
/jails set flag spawnjail-area
```

Preview the border:

```
/jails flagpreview spawnjail-area
```

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Pick the punishment

In `config.yml`, set:

```yaml
jail-settings:
  punish-on-escape: true
  escape-punishment: TELEPORT_BACK
  ban-duration: "1d"
```

`escape-punishment` accepts `KILL`, `TELEPORT_BACK`, `BAN`, or `UNJAIL`. If `punish-on-escape` is `false`, staff still get an alert and the player is not punished.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Walk the edge on an alt

Jail a test account. Walk that account out of the flag. Confirm the punishment matches the config.

{% hint style="danger" %}
Test the border before you set `escape-punishment` to `BAN`. A corner that is one block short will ban a player who is still inside the jail.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Delete a flag with `/jails delete flag spawnjail-area`. List flags with `/jails list flags`.
