# Jail a player

Jail, tempjail, or handcuff a player, then release them.

Use this when you already have a jail from Start here.

## Permanent jail

```
/jails jail <player> <jail> [reason]
```

Example:

```
/jails jail Steve spawnjail griefing
```

The player stays jailed until staff run `/jails unjail`.

## Timed jail

```
/jails tempjail <player> <jail> <time> [reason]
```

Time uses a number and a unit. Common units are `s`, `m`, `h`, and `d`.

```
/jails tempjail Steve spawnjail 30m spam
```

Check time left with `/jails duration Steve`.

## Handcuffs

Handcuffs work in both editions. They slow the player, apply darkness, and can block items, building, and PvP. Edit those flags under `handcuff-settings` in `config.yml`.

```
/jails handcuff Steve
/jails unhandcuff Steve
```

## Release

```
/jails unjail Steve
```

If `general.unjail-confirmation` is `true`, confirm the chat prompt.

## Jails+ extras

Jails+ can jail every account on the same IP:

```
/jails ipjail Steve spawnjail 1d alt-evasion
```

Alts that join later go to the same jail.

To change time without releasing the player:

```
/jails set duration Steve 10m
```

To put the player in a cell you already created:

```
/jails tempjail Steve spawnjail 1h griefing cell1
```

### Silent punishments

To suppress the public chat broadcast, add `-s` to the command:

```
/jails jail -s Steve spawnjail griefing
/jails tempjail -s Steve spawnjail 30m spam
/jails ipjail -s Steve spawnjail 1d alt-evasion
/jails unjail -s Steve
```

The staff member and the target player still receive private notifications.

### Punishment history

To inspect previous punishments for a player:

```
/jails history Steve
```

This displays the date, duration, reason, staff member, and status for each recorded punishment. Players can view their own history with `/jails history`.
